6 New Mexico Legislators Retiring

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Democratic Rep. Ernest Chavez of Albuquerque is the sixth legislator to announce plans to retire from the 70-member House.

The 77-year-old Chavez said Monday his age and health were among the reasons he will not seek re-election. He missed the 30-day legislative session because of medical problems, but will continue serving through December when his term expires.

Chavez has represented an Albuquerque area district since 2004.

Republican Rep. Anna Crook of Clovis announced over the weekend that she won't seek re-election. She's served in the House since 1995.

Legislators previously announcing their retirement are Reps. Nathan Cote, an Organ Democrat; Tom Taylor, a Farmington Republican; Henry Kiki Saavedra, an Albuquerque Democrat; and Rick Miera, an Albuquerque Democrat and House majority leader.

Legislative candidates file for office on March 11.
