Albuquerque Man Accused of Killing Wife Gets Life in Prison

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An Albuquerque man accused of fatally stabbing his estranged wife nearly 50 times in front of their two young sons has pleaded no contest to first-degree murder. A judge sentenced Jerry Chavez to life in prison Tuesday. He will be eligible for parole after 30 years. Chavez was accused of breaking into the home of Sandra Ferrales in October 2013, dragging her out of the shower and stabbing her multiple times with a kitchen knife. The couple's 12-year-old son called 911 and their 6-year-old son also was home at the time of the murder. Chavez was 48 at the time of the crime.
