APS keeps its protections for transgender students

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Albuquerque Public Schools will keep its broad protections for transgender students even though the Trump administration is reversing a federal directive on transgender access to public school bathrooms. APS spokeswoman Monica Armenta tells the Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/2lgnLCH) that the district will keep its policy until the Trump administration issues explains its policy of letting the issue be decided at the local level. Trump has ended a directive issued during the Obama administration that told schools to let transgender students use bathrooms and locker rooms of their chosen gender. Under APS' policy, a child who was born male but identifies as female can choose a new name, dress as a girl, be addressed as "she," play on girls sports teams and access the girls restroom and locker room.
