Authorities Search For Inmate After Jail Van Escape

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say they are searching for a jail inmate who escaped from the back of a transport van in Albuquerque. Deputy Felicia Romero, a spokeswoman with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, tells the Albuquerque Journal that the inmate was last seen in a white T-shirt without handcuffs. Authorities say the inmate smashed the back of a van window to escape. Before the escape, the inmate was being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, a Bernalillo County facility that is one of the largest jails in the country. The escape comes three months after two inmates with violent criminal histories fled the back of a state prisoner transport van in southern New Mexico. They were caught days later in Albuquerque.
