LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A Chaparral man is accused of having a 15-year-old provide the breath sample for his vehicle's interlock device.
Dona Ana County Sheriff's officials say 33-year-old Charles Chacon also allegedly allowed the juvenile to drive the vehicle.
It was stopped by deputies in Las Cruces after the driver allegedly failed to use a turn signal.
Chacon was arrested for tampering with an interlock system and allowing an unauthorized person to operate the system.
They say Chacon has several previous DWI convictions. He was transported Monday to the county detention center and was later released.
An interlock device is often required for convicted drunk drivers. It prohibits the vehicle's operation if a clean breath sample is not provided upon starting the vehicle and during intermittent intervals while the vehicle is in motion.
