Hot, dry weather prompts high fire danger on Lincoln forest

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — Hotter temperatures and drying winds have prompted officials in southern New Mexico to increase the level of fire danger on the Lincoln National Forest. Forest officials say the higher rating extends across the entire forest to include the Smokey Bear, Sacramento and Guadalupe ranger districts. A rating of "high" means that fine dead fuels will ignite readily and fires will start easily from most causes. Officials also say unattended brush and campfires are likely to escape. Despite the new rating taking effect Friday, forest officials say there are still no fire restrictions in place but they're warning visitors to be careful.
