Las Cruces Schools Brace For Bus Driver Strike

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Leaders of a bus drivers' union in New Mexico say there will likely be a strike among drivers for Las Cruces Public Schools.

The representatives of the Las Cruces Transportation Federation Local 6341 say negotiations broke down between the union and STS New Mexico, the private company that provides bus service for the district.

The collective bargaining agreement between the union and STS expires Thursday. No further negotiation sessions are scheduled.

LCTF President Marcos Torres said in a statement that a strike was unanimously supported by chapter members over concerns for student safety and the quality of buses.

Las Cruces Superintendent Stan Rounds said at a news conference that the district is preparing for the worst-case scenario and will provide information to parents Thursday.
