A graduated of the University of New Mexico, Brooks started his journalism career as a sports reporter at El Defensor Chieftain in Socorro, then at the Valencia County News Bulletin. He then worked for publications in Nebraska and Iowa. Brooks replaces Martin Salazar, who stepped down in February to take a job as a reporter with the Albuquerque Journal.
