Man Gets Prison Term For Shooting, Wounding 2 NMSU Students

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A man accused of shooting and wounding two New Mexico State University students in 2014 has been sentenced to 13 ½ years in prison. Prosecutors say 25-year-old Philip Zaman was sentenced Wednesday. Five months ago, Zaman pleaded no contest to attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a firearm and criminal damage to property. Zaman was an NMSU student at the time of the November 2014 shooting at a Las Cruces home near the school's campus. He was accused of firing at two other students in a bedroom. Prosecutors say one victim was shot in the stomach while the other was shot while trying to run away. A bullet grazed his shoulder, entered his mouth and knocked out several teeth before exiting his cheek.
