NM Agency Gives More Leeway on Physical Education

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The state Public Education Department is allowing some high school students to count activities such as marching band, athletics and Junior ROTC for their physical education requirement.

A recent from the department updates rules on waivers. It says current seniors and some juniors can be grandfathered in under old rules if districts apply for waivers.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the waivers apply to a new state rule. It blocks students from using other courses or activities to substitute for physical education to graduate from high school.

The department says juniors are eligible for waivers if they have already applied an extracurricular activity toward their required credit for physical education.

Department spokesman Larry Behrens says 26 school districts and charter schools have applied for waivers so far.
