Communities throughout New Mexico will be observing Memorial Day with memorial services and events scheduled on Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday, May 24 through Monday, May 26.)
Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday which is celebrated on the final Monday of May to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that war. By the 20th century, Congress changed the day to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.
The public is encouraged to attend a Memorial Day service or event in their community. (click here for a list of Memorial Day services or events in New Mexico).
