Republican Candidate Squeaks Into Election By 1 Signature

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — One decisive signature on a campaign petition is allowing a Republican war veteran to challenge incumbent Democrat Rep. Matthew McQueen of Galisteo in fall elections.

Jeremy Tremko of Moriarty announced Tuesday that a district judge in Santa Fe has validated just enough petition signatures for him to run unopposed for the Republican nomination. Rep. McQueen's district stretches from the outskirts of Santa Fe south across portions of Bernalillo, Torrance and Valencia counties.

Republicans control the New Mexico House by a 37-33 seat advantage. That means just three legislative races could alter the balance of power.

McQueen urged a state district judge to disqualify Tremko by striking two petition signatures submitted by the same person. Judge David Thomson ruled that one of those signatures counts. McQueen is considering an appeal.
