State Police Say Man Held Woman, Child Hostage

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State Police say a man was holding a woman and a child hostage in Sunland Park before police shot him.

Sunland Park police responded to a call on Sunday night regarding a domestic violence incident. A caller reported that 18-year-old Rafael Cervantes had held several relatives hostage in a house by threatening them with a knife.

Cervantes was found in a parked car with a woman and a young child outside the house when police arrived. Police say Cervantes tried to flee and refused to comply with officers' commands. An officer fired his weapon, striking Cervantes once. Police said Cervantes is in critical condition.

The officer has not been identified. He was placed on standard leave while State Police investigate the shooting.
