Additional murder charge filed in New Mexico shooting spree

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A suspect in a shooting spree across northern New Mexico has been charged with an additional count of murder after the death of his mother from a gunshot wound. The office of District Attorney Marco Serna on Wednesday confirmed the charge against 21-year-old Damian Herrera of Ojo Caliente. Herrera is accused by police and prosecutors of fatally shooting his mother, Maria "Brenda" Gallegos, as well as his stepfather and brother at the family's home in La Madera last week. Authorities say Herrera then traveled 200 miles (322 kilometers) across northern New Mexico and fatally shot two more people before his arrest the same day. Gallegos was shot in the head and remained on life support in an effort to preserve her organs before being pronounced dead Friday evening.
