Bloomfield Man Gets Prison In Involuntary Manslaughter Case

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A Bloomfield man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors say 40-year-old Jasper Fernandez received a 46-month term Tuesday.

He will be on supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence and must pay almost $1,325 in restitution for the victim's funeral expenses.

Fernandez was arrested in February 2012 in the Nov. 4, 2011, death of a 36-year-old woman on the Navajo Nation. He pleaded guilty last month.

According to court filings, Fernandez and the woman were intoxicated when the victim began kicking and punching Fernandez because he criticized her.

Fernandez pushed the woman away too hard and she hit her head against a car door.

Authorities say Fernandez failed to seek medical attention for her and buried her remains.
