New Mexico Woman Pleads Guilty in Child's Death

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico woman has pleaded guilty to child abuse in the 2007 death of her infant daughter.

Prosecutors say 32-year-old Sophia Monique Zayas entered her plea Monday in a federal court in Las Cruces.

She's been in federal custody since her April 2012 arrest along her 29-year-old husband, a former Air Force sergeant. Peter John Zayas pleaded guilty in the case last week.

The couple was arrested by the FBI for allegedly causing the death of their 2-month-old child in October 2007.

In her plea agreement, Sophia Zayas acknowledged that her daughter sustained fractures to the skull, ribs and other body parts as a result of her negligence.

The couple remains detained pending their sentencing hearings and prosecutors say they're each facing up to 18 years in prison.
