New Mexico's Oil Region Seeing Student Enrollment Drops

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) — School districts in the heart of New Mexico's oil region are reporting student enrollment declines amid an oil and gas downturn. The Hobbs News-Sun reports (https://goo.gl/XzwVZN) Lovington Superintendent LeAnne Gandy says her district is down around 80 students from the figure reported to the state for budget purposes last spring. And Hobbs Superintendent T.J. Parks says his enrollment is down 50 students from the same period. Both numbers are based on 40-day enrollment figures. The drop is student enrollment could cost both districts hundreds of thousands of dollars. The 40-day enrollment numbers for Jal, Eunice, and Tatum will not be available until next week.
